The USS Gambier Bay (CVE-73) was a Casablanca-class escort carrier of the United States Navy during World War II and is remembered as the only U.S. aircraft carrier ever sunk by surface gunfire from an enemy fleet.She fought valiantly during the Battle off Samar (part of the Battle of Leyte Gulf), where a small group of escort carriers and destroyers faced a far superior Japanese surface force.
