Engineering troops were a necessary element of any army since World War I and Soviet army was not an exception. Soviet engineers were well trained and equipped with all necessary tools. They were capable of constructing strong fortifications in short terms. They could also place mines, remove enemy mines, construct or repair necessary structures, such as bridges over broad rivers.
