The MQ-9 is a remotely piloted, unmanned aerial vehicle. It is flown by a two-person crew from a ground station. Powered by a 900 hp turboprop engine, the MQ-9 reaches a top speed of 480 km/h, while its 1,800 kg of fuel gives it a range of 1,900 km. NASA named this MQ-9 "Ikhana." The name comes from the Choctaw language, an indigenous people of North America, and means "intelligent, aware, perceiving"very fitting for an aircraft used in research and testing of new advanced systems for observation, data collection, and autonomous operation of drones. Since its acquisition in 2006, "Ikhana" has been used not only for numerous scientific projects but also for monitoring wildfires and supporting firefighting operations throughout California.
