A rugged, no-nonsense freight car appropriate for heavy coal service in the Northeast and Midwest, this 70-ton offset three-bay hopper reflects the long coal-hauling heritage of the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie. Although the P&LE remained a separate subsidiary after the 1968 Penn Central merger, its cars frequently wore PC-era patching and continued to roam widely in interchange service, making them a realistic addition to Penn Centralera consists. Offset hoppers of this design trace their lineage to late 1930s and 1940s construction, built for durability and efficient unloading in demanding service.
