The E231-1000 series Kozu cars were introduced in 2004 for the Tokaido Line.
The cars are characterized by their promotion of universal design, with the installation of lamps for opening and closing the boarding and alighting doors, and the addition of through doors as a fire prevention measure from the third train onwards.
The E231 series also introduced the first two-story green car, and in parallel with this, green cars were introduced to existing Koyama cars (for the Utsunomiya Line and Takasaki Line). The Kozu cars are newly manufactured with eight cars, and early-model Saha cars that were reassembled from the Koyama cars are installed in cars 6 and 7, making them an irregular formation, which is a unique feature of the Kozu cars. Work to update the main equipment will begin in 2021, and modifications to accommodate platform doors are also being made.
The vehicle is currently in service on regular trains on the Ueno-Tokyo Line (Tokaido Line between Numazu and Tokyo, Utsunomiya Line between Tokyo and Utsunomiya, Takasaki Line between Omiya and Takasaki, Ryomo Line between Takasaki and Maebashi) and the Shonan-Shinjuku Line (between Zushi/Odawara and Maebashi/Utsunomiya).
